What does the International Women’s Day 2020 mission mean to members of the trade?
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. The theme for 2020 is #EachForEqual, the idea that although individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions; collectively we can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements. That each one of us can help create a gender equal world.
With this in mind, the Women’s Jewellery Network wanted to give its ambassadors a chance to have their say.
While there’s not enough space to include all the ambassadors, here’s a selection sharing what this year’s theme, #EachForEqual, means to them…
“I am always amazed by the resilience of women around the world. My heart goes to celebrate these strong goddesses around the world who, like lionesses, never give up and keep fighting for their rights, their families and a better life.” Catherine Marche Catherine Marche Jewellery @catherinemarche | WJN Ambassador South London
“All women should feel safe in their working environment. Being treated as equals is a must! This can be achieved by workplaces being fair and honest with all employees. The gender pay gap should continue to close to create a feeling of equal achievement, no matter what the trade or industry… we got this girls!” Aysha Hazell L.P.D. Jewellery @l.p.d_jewellery| WJN Ambassador Oxford
“#EachForEqual means we have to have the same chances to realise our goals — private and professional. Of course, we are not the same but whatever! We have to be respected, understood and, most importantly, supported in our choices if we think these ones are good for us!” Marie Chabrol Le Gemmologue @le_gemmologue| WJN Ambassador France
“#EachForEqual means rewriting the stories of our future, where a woman’s ability doesn’t need to far exceed a man’s ability for her to be seen as equal. A new future is only a story away.” Ruth Mary Chipperfield Ruth Mary Jewellery @ruthmaryjewellery | WJN Ambassador Coventry
“It’s not whether the door opens that defines your success; it’s how hard you push it! That door must be as equally open for everyone.” Satta Matturi Satta Matturi Jewellery @sattamatturijewellery | WJN Ambassador South Africa
“#EachForEqual is about sisterhood. It’s about removing the divide our society teaches us to create and replacing it with admiration and respect for all women.” Jessica Steele Jessica Steele Jewellery @jessicasteelejewellery | WJN Ambassador Leeds
